Milt Jackson “Sunflower”
A friend had blessed me with this gem. Sunflower was recorded over two days in the month of December, 1972 on CTI Records. The album was produced by Creed Taylor, the founder of CTI. It was arranged and conducted by Don Sebesky.

The musicians that played on Sunflower create a very authentic, and raw jazz fusion sound. This record could easily be one to sum up a few decades of jazz music, mainly because it houses many different musicians with many different backgrounds and styles. Cobham’s energetic drumming, Herbie’s earthy tone, Freddie’s traditional Bebop style, Ron’s momentum, and Milt’s consistancy push an unmeasured depth on the music. These jazz stars have lengthy discographies of work they have contributed to. Some of jazz music’s greats. A joint like this is cool to have in your hands and sounds great when in rotation! This record was recorded between the months of July and September in 1974 on Blue Note Records. It was produced and arranged by Larry Mizell and Chuck Davis.

When I first picked this record up at a store a few years back I was real happy because this album in particular has a unique sound. A collection of musicians and instruments that simultaneously create a heavy, deep, murky, spacious, lofty, and light harmony that complements the melodies of these grooves. Bobbi Humphrey has contributed to many pieces of work and recorded over a dozen records threwout the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s. A number of artists have also sampled her music.
